Swim Log 5-8-17

So, still getting back into the swing (swim?) of non-breaststroke things. I had a lesson setup for Thursday but had to postpone just shy of a week. Did do 1 100 yard free under 1:30. Wasn’t that taxing. I’ll do more of that tomorrow. Felt good.

Swim Log 05-02-17

Getting more into it, actually my (dread/wretched) backstroke is feeling less bad than it ever had. Some habits from breaststroke seems to have improved my freestyle as well, although on the 11th I’ll have a lesson and we will discover if that is actually true.

Swim Log 4-22-17 (race!) and the subsequent workouts

So Saturday I raced. The big twist was the course was meters (short course) not yards (the pool I train at is yards). I did a 44 in the 50, a 3:30 in the 200 and a DQ (bad start) on the 100. The 100 time was pretty bad as I was still shaking from the effort in the 200 before I started the 100. I think in the future I won’t sign up for 100s after a 100. Looks from the splits like I went out too fast in the 200 and barely survived. Also in the 8 weeks between this race and the last some bad habits had snuck in. Should have video’d my training some to get feedback or had a lesson. But it’s my very first year. The 3:30 by the “motivational time sheet” puts me under the “A” time which was my season goal. So I have that to fall back on.

The last few days (missed Monday) I’ve returned to a balanced workout, but my back and free are way way way out of shape. That should come back quickly if I hammer at it.

Swim Log 4-11-2017

Slight hiatus, missed logging a workout or so, and missed two days (yesterday T-storms, Sunday working, and Thursday last week, traveling). Today, starting “taper”, which for me means shorter workout, after warm-ups, less drills, less kicking and most swimming is at race pace (although not often for full race distances).

Swim Log: 4-4-17

Whooo. Two good workouts in a row. Today (after warmup/drills 1000 yards) did 4×50 on the 1:00 twice and 2×50 on the 1:00 twice as well. The first 4x50s all came in at :47. On the 2nd, the first one came in at :45 but the final 3 at :46/:47. Kicking was fast today, 6×100 all about 1:52 .. actually time sneaked up on the 5th, but got it at 1:51 for the last.

Swim Log: 4-3-17

After warmup did 3×100 descending 3 times. Then 4×50 “pick your speed” trying to match a particular speed goal on each 50 (on the 2:00, except for the :48 which I went on 1:30). Kicked 4×100 under 1:50 to finish.

Swim Log: 4-1-17

So, I did swim Wednesday (and Friday), but was busy and didn’t log it. At some point in my sprint sets, I injured my left knee (one I tweaked skiing a few years back). I’ve been on Naproxen and watching it since then. Today did a short set, oddly winded during my swim. After warmup and drills did 50s and then 5×100 kicking.

Total yardage: 2000 yards.

Swim Log: 3-28-17

“Standard warmup” (600 yards) then 4×50 breath control drill. After another easy 100 did a pair of 200s. Then some moderately fast 50s and kicking (8×100 all around 1:50 +/- 2 seconds … except the last one which was 1:46).

Swim Log: 3-26-17

A few days off backpacking (more in the next post on that regard). Although walking is difficult with stiff muscles from unaccustomed use, all swimming muscles were just fine as expected. Emily’s cold may have had some effect. Anyhow, pretty standard (weekday type) workout. Warmup + 400 yards drills (mostly breath control). 500 yards tempo work finishing off with 3×100 kicking descending sets (rate @ or just under 1:55, 1:50, 1:45 with varying rest (less than a minute)) done 3 times. Then an easy kick 100 and warm down.

Swim Log: 3-21-17

An interesting development today. Main set and warmup went as usual, did a batch of 100s and some 50s. Then … instead of doing 10×100 kick keeping just under 2:00 for the kick set I decided to do 5×100 but after the first one I tried see if I could break 1:50. Well, the first one came in at 1:43, then I pushed it trying to break 1:40, didn’t but got a 1:42, and two 1:41s. Well the “under 2” just became “under 1:50”. Duh.

Swim Log: 3-20-17

Worked this weekend, no swimming. Actually will be backpacking downstate later this week.

Swimming -> after warmup did 650 yards of 2×50 on 1:00 with a long rest. If the first 50 wasn’t either :46 or :47 … waited the long rest to try again. Made sure the 2nd 50 was *also* the same time. Next week will do 3x50s similarly, restarting if the first or second 50 isn’t in the time interval I’m looking for.

finished with 10×100 kicking under 2:00. total yardage 2800.

Swim Log: 3-16-17

Main set … 10×50 first 5 on 1:15 (:46-:48 swim) 2nd 5 on 1:30 (:42-:44). Didn’t do well to hold low :40s for the 2nd set so … since yesterday’s 10×100 kick set left me wobbly I did it again … a little faster I think.

Swim Log: 3-15-17

Too much lunch (was traveling in morning so I couldn’t eat my normal pre-workout prep/food). So … after warm up (6×100 easy free/breast) and 8×50 drills … I did 5×100 at about a 1:46 pace with 30 seconds rest. Then did one 100 at my hoped for 200 pace (1:34) with a attention on keeping my pace even. Finally did 10×100 kicking (whip) all under 2:00.

Swim Log: 3-14-17

Main set (breaststroke still) did 10×50 on the 1:15 all :45 or just under. Followed by 5×100 descend on 50. Finished with 6×25 (odds @ 100%, evens freestyle ez). Those 3 25s I did my best ever, breaking :19 on all of them. Started with w/u, drills and ended with kicking.

Monday: Swim Log 3-6-17

Recovery from yesterday’s LSD. Shorter set.

Total Yardage: 2250

After warmup (600 yards 2 x (100 free + 2 x 100 breast)) and drills (400 yards). Did 100 repeats (5) at tempo (sub 1:40 breast) and 4×50 trying for speed. Tired today best was :43. The kicking and cool down.

Sunday Swim 3-5-17

LSD (Long steady distance) workout was intended. I didn’t make my goal … but legs are tired so that’s good.

Total distance 5050 yards

Came in thinking I’d do 100 repeats of 75 yards on the 1:40. Did 44 and was feeling a little soreness in knees and elbow. Finished with kicks and easy 100s. 95% breaststroke today. Probably should have persisted to do 6 more to make it 50 repeats. Oh, well.
