Tuesday Highlights

G’day

  1. Part 2 on hiding in the networked world.
  2. Pharma and research/development trends.
  3. Engine hybridization and tech.
  4. How not to make an argument, that is start with a analogy which doesn’t reflect historically very well.
  5. Superman and a review.
  6. Celebrating an addiction shared by many.
  7. First comment says it all. Yikes.
  8. Ms Clinton does algebraic number theory? Oh wait, some other relative unknown person  … I’d have thought only Grigory would be identified by last name alone. Although I suspect “shmooze” is not a word you’d use in the context of the latter.
  9. On the blowing of the whistles.
  10. On the high court and the fifth Amendment.
  11. In the boys + toys department.
  12. Speaking of toys.
  13. Loneliness.
  14. There has been some pushback on GOP criticizing Mr Obama for using a water pistol, but when stuff like this done by Mr Obama’s supporters, that’s what you get.
  15. Video and violence.

Hmmm, seems that you should read this obscure blogger named Mark who wrote back on June 7th

“8.“Government” here is not the feds … it’s your school board. If you don’t like it, gosh, you can actually do something about it (or if you do like it … you can support it).”

Granted I understand why you may not accept this as coming from a credible source. He doesn’t value consistency very much nor does he seem to care very much about being accurate in his factual claims. He does, though, occassionaly have something interesting to say that you may want to consider incorporating this into your commentary.

  2. 5.Superman and a review.

Willing to try the new movie but…this I think has always been the problem with Superman. He doesn’t bring out any real heroism in himself or anyone because he can’t really be a hero. He is basically someone who has entered the cheat code to the game of life in the universe. Sure there will be some drama a the start of each story but ultimately Superman’s super powers trump whatever powers are allied against him. What’s the point?

The Watchmen movie grasped this by demonstrating that heroism really is brought out by convincing Superman (aka Dr. Manhattan) to just go away. In fact by being an alternative reality story we can see that humanity as a whole is worse off for having superheros in their universe, even though to the heros remaining it might have seemed they ‘saved the day’ on some level.

  3. Boonton,
I see, and you suspect the school boards doing that are conservative “clinging to guns, god, &c” and not liberals afraid to touch guns? Note I didn’t cite this as “the feds” but “Mr Obama’s supporters” are not (alas) Mr Obama … so I’m not seeing the dichotomy which you suspect.

Regarding Superman … I agree that is a problem with Superman, i.e threat and suspense are problematic with his omnipotence. I did like Watchmen, Rorschach was the character I followed most closely … DC ran a “before watchmen” series recently, btw.

  4. Note I didn’t cite this as “the feds” but “Mr Obama’s supporters” are not (alas) Mr Obama

From what I saw this happened in West Virginia, which wasn’t much of an Obama strongehold last I checked. Perhaps this is a good illustration of what’s wrong with many Republicans these days. Cry on one hand that Obama’s leading a conspiracy to steal your guns while on the other hand allow your local school to harass some kid for wearing an NRA shirt.

What’s your take on the movie versus the original graphic novel versus the new stuff? I’ve only watched the movie of Watchmen and V for Vendetta and liked both.

  5. Boonton,
I looked. Logan county (of which Logan WV is a part) elected all Democrats. Sorry. Wiki informs that the coal regions and union areas of WV are Democrat strongholds (Byrd, recall was from WV).

Perhaps that’s a good illustration in turn of what’s wrong with many Republican’s these days, a willingness to accept unwarranted assumptions.

  6. Boonton,
Oh, I liked the Watchman book, haven’t read the V for Vendetta one.

  7. Nice try

You didn’t say Democrats, you said Obama supporters. Logan county went for Romney by nearly 70%
