Wednesday Highlights

Good morning.

  1. Of revenge and justice. Is motive the only difference?
  2. Loyalty Day? Where is the liberal outrage? Where? Hmmm? Let’s see, what if Mr Bush had suggested that?
  3. A better way to remember May 1. More links here.
  4. More grist for the wind farm/climate discussion.
  5. A thought experiment on truth telling.
  6. Anti-semitism in Norway.
  7. Huh? Insanity on the left coast.
  8. Rational huh? Evidence to the contrary abounds.
  9. Obama’s politicization of his assassination of OBL noted. The left can explain the crucial difference between “not moving heaven and earth” and “if we have a shot we’ll take it”. Seems like they were on the same page.
  10. People densities on the planet projected in space.
  11. Nuptials of a different sort.
  12. Coolness, noted as no biggie by the left. An essential feature of coolness it seems to me is that coolness is a raising of style and aesthetic over substance. If you think that’s not important … perhaps you also believe that.

  1. From the windfarm link:

Frankly speaking, my guess is that the main explanation is that the wind turbines simply reduce the mixing of the air near the surface with the cooler air at higher latitudes which allows the air near the surface to get warmer and the higher air to stay cooler.

In other words, no actual average change in temperature.

  2. 9.Obama’s politicization of his assassination of OBL noted. The left can explain the crucial difference between “not moving heaven and earth” and “if we have a shot we’ll take it”. Seems like they were on the same page.

If only Romney had said just that, instead he clearly set himself on the side of Bush’s policy of unilateral and nearly unconditional support of Musharraf. Back then Romney also said:

We do not go out and say to a nation which is working with us, where we have collaborated and they are our friend and we’re trying to support Musharraf and strengthen him and his nation, that instead that we intend to go in there and potentially bring out a unilateral attack.

And no bin laden as not a ‘slam dunk’ that any President ‘even Carter’ would have ordered taken out in Pakistan if he had known. The Bush administration itself passed on a raid that might have taken out not only Bin Laden but also al-Zawahri in 2005 because it might have ‘upset’ relations with ‘our friend’ Pakistan (see http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/08/washington/08intel.html?_r=1&tw_p=twt)

Obama is absolutely correct here. He did campaign on rejecting the policy of “Pakistan above nearly everything else” policy, Romney embraced that policy. Rejecting that policy allowed us to go get to the point where we could take out Bin Laden. Romney’s policy of asking permission first from Pakistan would have likely resulted in a raid of a compound that had been evaculated and empty.

  3. Boonton,

In other words, no actual average change in temperature.

Hmmm. CO2 also doesn’t change temperature in exactly the same way.

    Problem solved.

  4. No one says it does. A pile of CO2 sitting in the middle of space won’t by itself produce energy.

  5. 12.Coolness, noted as no biggie by the left. An essential feature of coolness it seems to me is that coolness is a raising of style and aesthetic over substance. If you think that’s not important … perhaps you also believe that.

One would think those who would adopt an anti-cool stance would then actually try bringing more substance to the table.

  6. 2.Loyalty Day? Where is the liberal outrage? Where? Hmmm? Let’s see, what if Mr Bush had suggested that?

Liberals are totally consistent. There was no outrage when Bush II did it, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, and Nixon. As Wikipedia tells us:

With the exception of Eisenhower in 1959 and 1960, and the years 1966 thru 1974, Loyalty day has been recognized with an official proclamation every year by every president since its inception as a legal holiday in 1958.[7]

So where was the outrage by the right during all those other Presidential terms that did what Obama just did? Hmmm? Or does it seem like we have a double standard here by those who are eager to accuse others of double standards?
