Morning Links 8/2

  • Mike Russell (Eternal Perspectives) debates and discusses teaching when our beliefs are in flux. It’s a good essay, but a short phrase caught my attention:

In other words, Scot’s students came to the conclusions that they sensed he favored. Students are extremely malleable but also quite perceptive: they can be easily influenced but are very quick to discern what position is likely to result in a better grade.

This reminded my of a fascinating Ethics class I took as an undergraduate with Leon Kass. It was a 10 week course, and each week we read a book for discussion the following week. The class met two days a week. On the first day, Mr Kass would re-state arguments made on one side, and we might sense he favored that side of the issue at hand. On the next day we met he would take the opposite tack. Both Mr Kass’ skill at restatement (it was indeed quite a wonder how much more sense your statement sounded when he rephrased it) and from our respect for our teacher caused the point of view which he was supporting each day to clearly be the “right” point of view. What of course made it interesting was putting the two days in juxtaposition.

  • Joe Carter (Evangelical Outpost) on how ideology becomes a fantasy fulfillment for the rich, bored intellectuals of our world and the dangers that entail.
  • Bill Wallo is looking for parents with children reaching college age (or those who are thinking about it already). He also has an interesting book review on a Economics & Ethics book.
  • Arthur Chrenkoff has a question.
  • Mr Bush has appointed (recess) Mr Bolton as the UN ambassador. Chicago Boyz is as good a place as any to start reading about it. Although, I’d bet the left leaning bloggers will have (unkind) words to say about it as well.

Well, I’m a little under the weather … but optimistic that it’s just a short term rhino-virus.
