    Lessons and climategate.

You know, I kind of recall all this outrage when some kid hacked into Sarah Palin’s Yahoo email account. Now I notice a distinct lack of outrage by members of the right in light of another case of email hacking….

    Boonton,
What’s your point? The linked piece offers two points, polemic is not good science (or in academic pursuits in general) but that it is common, and be warned that email is not a private as you think. What is problematic about that?

Nobody here is lauding the hacker or his act, in fact the post I linked, links approvingly a post which terms the hacker in negative terms.

When it happened with Palin I recall you and others slamming the victimization button with both fists….not calmly pointing out that Yahoo email is not very secure, choosing password recovery questions whose answers are public information, and violating state laws requiring gov’t business be done on gov’t email is a bad idea.

    Boonton,
Yes, you’ve now repeated twice that your point about bringing Ms Palin up is that there was an email “hack” that occurred then. But … that begs the question. What point are you trying to make in bringing that up? Are you forgetting there was an election going on back then?

  5. Boonton says

Its only wrong to hack email during elections?

  6. Boonton says

Or you are asserting that you freely apply a double standard when elections are happening so we should therefore assign you no credibility during some unspecified period of time before a major election.

  7. Mark says

    Boonton,
I’m unclear on the double standard you seem to be asserting. I’ve not claimed the act wasn’t wrong (or even criminal). So, nowhere have I made any assertion that it is “right” to hack email. So … to what double do you refer? I’m still trying to find the point you are making.

Let’s see, if you google the Palin email hack, you find personal pictures of Ms Palin and her family posted … still, on the net. Those which might be deemed damaging are prominent, although the tongue sticking out funny face one to me seems not damaging but engaging. I have not seen any postings of this email which are displaying and exposing demonstrating personal private behavior, i.e., embarrassing details. Odd that. Next time when you want to jump on the right vs left and their mores and customs … keep it that in mind, i.e., that the left seems in some cases more quick the wrong way.

Anyhow that is likely not the point you are trying to make. So … what double standard is being exposed here. I still don’t get it.

I’m not sure how much private stuff you’re going to get from cracked *work* email files nor would I expect if there was any for it to get much play, after all we are talking about climate scientists and not celebrities here.

I’m also not sure how ‘the left’ is responsible for Palin’s personal emails being ‘still on the net’. Perhaps you could tell me where they are ‘still on the net’ and next time I’m at the Command and Control Headquarters of the Left I’ll pass a note to the Internet Control Room to remove them. They might get a bit snippy with me since they didn’t put them on the net, rather some kid wanted to prove his hacker bona fides….also I kind of owe them a favor since I asked them not to use the obama death beam on your site….but I’ll see what I can do.
