“A liberal unimpressed by liberal behavior. ”
There is a limit to how much you can hold an ideology accountable for what is essentially mob behavior. I remember when McCain conceeded to Obama there were boos in the crowd. Leaders should be gracious but ‘the people’ are a different animal. Crowds 200+ years ago were probably a lot more disrespectful than they are today.
But I’d differ over whether this unimpressive behavior is liberal behavior. Look, Bush has an approval rating of something like 20%. As much as I’d like to believe 80% of the population is liberal….and I know people attending the ceremony on Tuesday are probably more liberal as a group….the fact is Bush is a disgrace as a President. It would be impolite to have harped on him too much as he was going out the door but Bush is despised by a lot of Americans and for good reason. And this isn’t just a leftwing thing. More than a few conservatives have spent the last 8 years, especially the last 4 biting their tounge and tossing out arguments in Bush’s defense in their heart they knew were wrong.
Bush’s problem is not just one of failure. Many viewed Jimmy Carter as a failed President but few had intense dislike of him. I think the most common view of him was that he was a good man who tried hard but in the end wasn’t the best person for the job. Bush can be said to be all that too but there’s something else. There’s his remarkable arrogance. His refusal to engage in any honest evaluation of his mistakes. 8 years of in your face, “I’m the decider” bullshit while the country goes down the tubes is enough to make people angry.
I think at least a portion of the rudeness exhibited against Bush is due not to liberals indulging in poor manners (though I won’t deny such a thing exists) but in Americans in general being pissed off at the man and they have good cause to be.
