Regarding Mr. Maher, I agree that atheism is not a cure for magical thinking, but I think it’s kind of silly to represent believing in e.g. the virgin birth and resurrection as more rational than disbelieving in vaccination. Maher is empirically wrong on that, but at least his belief falls within the realm of naturalistic possibility.
As for believing in the occult — as far as I can tell that’s identically implausible as transubstantiation, resurrection, etc.
