    Selfishness now a virtue.

NOW it is? I thought that was the central philosophy of Republican economics.

Why is the sacred Name never used in the New Testament?

Now that is an interesting question.

RE: Selfishness now a virtue / Ayn Rand

    1. Realize that Rand’s “philosophy” is a sham — based on irrational and false premises. See this book: Without A Prayer by John W. Robins.

    Also here and here:

    2. National Review once described Rand’s ideas as having “a whiff of the gas chambers.” I always thought this was unfair to Rand, but does apply to many of her followers.

The actual kindergarten ‘sex bill’ can be read here (http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/fulltext.asp?DocName=&SessionId=3&GA=93&DocTypeId=SB&DocNum=99&GAID=3&LegID=734&SpecSess=&Session)

Note what seems to happen here is that commentators neglect to read the actual bill that Obama voted on and instead talk about curriculms which are not voted on at the state level and then take it to the next level and add in fantasy readings of them.

    For example, your author writes:

For example, GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) offers a course for educators seeking to shape the moral imagination of pre-K to third graders to an agenda more to GLSEN’s liking. I

Yes you see if you’re in the education business you’ll learn that lots of people offer ‘a course’….it’s the bread and butter of the business. This is kind of like saying if Senator X voted on a law to establish a library to house books and magazines….well Hustler is a magazine and they will sell a subscription to a library!!!!!

As usual, McCain and the GOP reconfirms their place as scum here.

    Self-interest != selfishness.

    Tag,
If you have ever read Atlas Shrugged treat yourself to Sewer, Electric, and Gas it’s a parody of the former and you will laugh outright reading it. It’s an amazing book.

    Boonton,
I didn’t read carefully down to the GLSEN part, just the interview with the co-sponser. However, I’ll admit in a bill like this I’m predisposed against the sponsors, for I strongly oppose the bill.

    1. I don’t think state or federal government should specify any content of curricula in the first place.
    2. I don’t think any sort of sexual education is generically good for pre-puberty kids especially those in Kindergarten. This is a case of tossing out the bushel because of one bad apple. How many kids are actually abused at that age, one in 1,000 or 10,000? Many if not most of those kids believe in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. It’s an innocent age, and should be kept that way. Instruction that “some adults” might “touch” you inappropriately is not necessary for all children and those kids who are at risk, can be singled out and treated specially if the school board or community decide that’s appropriate.

    Self-interest != selfishness.

That’s only true if you don’t put your self-interest above the interests of others.

    JA,
MacIntyre defined humans once as “dependent rational animals”. We rarely if ever put our self-interest above the interests of others.

  7. Boonton says

Why don’t you read the actual bill instead? it isn’t very long, not fun reading but not unmanagable. There was NO curricula specified in the bill. Only broad guidelines on what the curriculum should be and there’s NO divisions based on grade. The bill begins with opt out provisions for parents and includes little that I can see as objectionable.

The idea behind the bill is to establish general guidelines, the actual curricula is picked by the local school board. This is why the lie is so scummy. Because the bill IS leaving almost all the details up to the localities it doesn’t make any specific provisions like kindergarten should just have stuff to prevent sexual abuse. It simply states:

All (1) course material and instruction shall 13 be age and developmentally appropriate

So the liars put out the fantasies whose argument rests only on nothing in the bill specifically prohibits it. In essence, this is like saying supporting a library bill is supporting a porn library because the bill doesn’t contain a list of forbidden magazines.

Pop quiz — Who gives more to charity:

    Democrats or Republicans?

    Conservatives or progressives?

    Christians or atheists?

  9. Boonton says

Progressive Christians, I believe outrank Conservative Christians in charitable giving.

The least generous donators to charity are secular conservatives.

  12. Mark says

    Boonton,
Your Sex-Ed Bill link is broken.

    You could read this one.

That also points out that the number of secular conservatives is very strong.

Recall too that oft demonized Mr Cheney gives almost 80% of his income to charity.

  13. Mark says

    Boonton,
As Mr York points out, I’d like to ask you why you might defend amending the 6-12 to K-12 requirement on AIDS education. What does a (Santa Claus/Tooth Fairy) kindergarten kid need to know about AIDS?
