No, no, no, silly. The talking point is that Obama is an effete intellectual, not a Quayle. He can’t be both a Quayle and an effete intellectual any more than he can be both a Muslim and a radical Christian nut… oh wait.
Seriously, though, things like this only get significant attention if they fit into the larger storyline. The story on Quayle was that he was dumb, so every time he did anything that fit, everybody knew about it. Every candidate has one caricature, if the opposition is doing their job. Kerry was a flip-flopper, Gore was an exaggerator, Dubya is dumb. The problem with Obama (for Republicans) is that they haven’t been able to make a negative caricature stick. Right now, he’s still all positive caricature for the media.
McCain, too, is still without a negative caricature that sticks, despite many gaffes of his own that suggest he really doesn’t know much about Iraq — or anything else, really. Sunnis and Shias, whether the surge caused something that happened before it, that Iraq borders Pakistan, etc., etc. He said he doesn’t know that much about the economy. Etc.
Good point, this is a very bad election for caricatures. The only caricature I’ve seen that seems to be working for comedians is that Obama is without blemish (John Stewart had a line that after visiting Afghanistan and Iraq Obama stopped by Israel to be born in a manger).
