Joshua Clayborn at In The Agora notes a list of surveyed fictional (action — non-fantasy) heroes we “most want by our side in a disaster”. The list:
- MacGyver: 27%
- Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford: 16%
- John McClane, played by Bruce Willis in the Die Hard films: 14%
- James Bond (played by various actors): 8%
- Jason Bourne, played by Matt Damon: 8%
- Lara Croft, played by Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider: 7%
- Jack Bauer of 24, played by Kiefer Sutherland: 7%.
What’s your list. Actually I’d like to try two lists of seven and to include no names from the above list: One list of fictional heroes (including author) … and one of real ones who might be considered a boon companion in time of disaster. Here’s my fictional list (in no particular order):
- Jack Reacher (Lee Child).
- Quiller (Adam Hall/Elston Trevor)
- Conan (Robert Howard)
- Takeshi Kovacs (Richard Morgan)
- Odysseus (Homer)
- Dragon Ma Rulong (Project A and Project A part II)
- Richard Sharpe (Bernard Cornwall)
My historical list, admittedly chosen without discussion of overmuch consideration, meaning omissions and errors of judgement are likely:
- Simon de Montefort.
- Alvin York (actually any Medal of Honor recipient would do just fine … and I won’t list any more)
- William Wallace
- King David (of 1 and 2 Samuel)
- Basilius Heraclius
- Simon Kenton
- Miyamoto Musashi
Who’d I miss. Trackback your list(s) or put in in comments.
