Ms Malkin (and scads of others) point to the child rapist convicted to a whole 60 days in the pokey (after raping a girl for over 4 years). Byron at (Ticking Time Blog) wonders about the death penalty and the finality and its implications for those who are innocent.
The danger of mistaken conviction needs to be weighed against the dangers more often ignored in this day and age of mistaken acquital and the consequences when the crime is then repeated.
Oddly enough for the Christian more obvious problem with the death penalty is the accidental execution of unbelievers who might still come to believe. Accidental execution of believers is less of an issue … one would think. If a country was a Christian theocracy it seems theologically only executions might be permitted for believers … pagans and athiests get to live.
But as a father of two (mostly) wonderful little girls of that particular age bracket … if I might be less apt to move for 60 days and more likely to want the death penalty for such a crime as 4 years of rape of girls that young.
